The Tuyang Initiative was one of the 10 winners of this year’s Golden Hearts Award. It is an award by The Star Media Group and The Star Foundation to celebrate and recognise social-focused individuals, groups and organisations that contribute sustainably towards a better society.
This year, there were 150 nominations, which was submitted anonymously by members of the public. The submissions were based on the public’s feedback on the work of the individuals and organisations that benefit society, including the needy and less fortunate.
We are truly honoured that the humble work we do have managed to get noticed by the public, our peers and the esteemed judges.
Who would have guessed what we started as a simple idea which provides opportunities for indigenous community members to play key roles in showcasing aspects of their own cultural heritage as means to generate sustainable income through professional representation and management, is something that is possible, and embraced not only by the community, but the audience as well.
Our promise is that we will continue to push boundaries and do work that will positively impact the communities we work with. We will look not only at the preservation, but also the development of the community members through capacity building to ensure sustainability. This, we believe, will subsequently lead to the development of our arts and culture.
We hope that more people will feel inspired by the work of our community talents and want to actively play a part in making lives better for rural Dayak communities of Sarawak, and all Orang Asal across Malaysia.
We truly believe that this is the way forward to directly contribute to the meaningful continuation and protection of our communities rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
